Where: Room 51, Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC), Boston, MA

Boston Women in Bioinformatics is returning to the Festival of Genomics (Day 2) with a structured speed networking event. Join us Thursday, June 4 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM for fast-paced, one-on-one conversations with women working across bioinformatics, research, and industry.

Walk away with one memorable detail about every person you meet. Not just a LinkedIn connection, but a real reason to follow up. The goal isn't a bigger network. It's a better one: peer support, shared commiseration, and the occasional "I know exactly who you should talk to."

Pro tip: bring something to write with. One memorable detail per person goes a long way and you are going to want to write it down!

Where: Northeastern Crossing, 1175 Tremont St, Boston, MA 02120

Details

The Boston Women in Bioinformatics is excited to reunite with Joanna Ghayad, executive career coach to STEM scientists, on Take Up Space | Building Presence and Confidence in High-Stakes Moments.

You've been in this situation before.

You already have the expertise. But in the moments that matter most—a tough Q&A, a room full of senior stakeholders, a conversation where everything is on the line—it's easy to hesitate, over-qualify, or edit yourself out before you even begin.

This session is about changing that.

In this workshop, you'll:

Identify the self-editing habits that hold you back in high-pressure situations

Practice presence and confidence techniques you can use immediately

Learn the habits that develop between you and your stakeholders before the conversation even begins

For early career and seasoned scientists alike who want to develop the confidence to tackle high-stakes scenarios.

About the speaker: Joanna Ghayad is a certified career coach with 15+ years of experience in pharma, academia, and biotech. She specializes in helping scientists build portfolio careers and communicate their value with confidence. Joanna created a leadership development program at BMS that's now in its 5th year and has completed over 500 hours of coaching.

Details

In 1976, Cambridge packed the City Hall hearing room to debate a new biohazard lab designed for recombinant DNA research. Nobel Prize–winning scientists, passionate citizens, politicians, and the global press all converged on Cambridge to confront one explosive question: Who gets to decide the boundaries of scientific discovery? No Recombination without Representation is an immersive theatrical experience staged in the very same Cambridge City Hall hearing room where this conversation took place.

A partnership between the MIT Museum, Central Square Theater, and the City of Cambridge, All shows are free and open to the public on June 13th, 14th and 21st. You can find more info on performances here.

Where: CIC Cambridge @ 1 Broadway, 1 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02142

Summary

Lightning Talks are back! Sponsored by Seqera, the company behind Nextflow, Boston Women in Bioinformatics and Boston Computational Biology & Bioinformatics are teaming up again for an evening of fast, fun, community-driven talks. This is a low-stakes, high-energy format built for sharing ideas with people who get it.

What's a Lightning Talk?

Five minutes. That's it. Talk about your current work, a tool you love, something you learned the hard way, or a concept you think more people should know about. It's a great excuse to practice public speaking in a room full of friendly faces.

Call for Speakers

Submit your talk title and a short abstract (280 characters max) using this Google Form.

The deadline is Monday, June 1st.

A few ground rules:

All are welcome to submit: academia, industry, government, nonprofit, student. If you're part of this community, this event is for you.

We're here for the science and the ideas, not product pitches. If your work involves a specific platform, that's fine as long as the focus stays on what you discovered, not what you're selling.

Talks are strictly 5 minutes, enforced by audience participation and whatever noisemakers the organizers feel like bringing.

Submission decisions will be Monday, June 15th.
